SA State Championships - AUBC win Mens' Eight!

SA Rowing First Grade State Titles from A.M. Ramsay International course West Lakes, 20/02/2010.

AUBC win Mens' Eight at South Australian State Championships.

And it was the Adelaide Uni mens eight who won the 117th and  last race of the weekend on Sunday and the state title in the mens eights from their arch rivals and last years winners, the Adelaide club.

The two rivals were level after 500 metres of racing but then the Adelaide Uni crew, stroked by Mathew Bolt, settled on a rock solid 35 strokes per minute and took the lead over Adelaide who were always rating two or more strokes higher and looked short in their stroke making as they tried everything to keep up with the speed of the Adelaide Uni crew.

Adelaide Uni put on a finishing burst towards the end of the race but it was hardly needed as they crossed the finish line 7.29 seconds in front of Adelaide with the St Peters College crew 8.67 behind third and Prince Alfred College fourth.

The Adelaide Uni crew was again successfully coached by Michael Jeffries and contained several of the men who won the Australian Universities title last year and for this race was further strengthened by the inclusion of the experienced Australian representative Bolt and Olympian Chris Morgan.

Results for the rest of the regatta - Phil Mangelsdorf

Chris Morgan from Adelaide Uni won the race of the 2008 Olympians taking out the 2010 SA First Grade State Championship single sculls title ahead of James McRae from Murray Bridge Saturday morning at West Lakes.

But it was Sam Martin from Murray Bridge, who was the SA representative sculler last year in the absence of the two Olympians, who looked like causing an upset when he sped out of the new starting pontoons with a very high stroke rating and held a boat length lead over the seven boat field for the first 1000 metres of the race.

There was a strong northerly  head wind blowing and this made the water surface rough with challenging waves on the southern half of the regatta course but once the scullers passed half way and the waves subsided McRae and Morgan turned on their power and used their more extensive racing experience to push past Martin.

Morgan was rating some 5 points higher with his strokes per minute than McRae and he confidently pulled away from his Olympic crew mate until he had a clear water lead by the 1500 metre mark, a lead he held onto until the finish line several boat lengths ahead of McRae with Martin third and Tom Sullivan from Renmark fourth.

Earlier on the programme Maja Fiddler from Torrens confirmed her status as the state’s leading lightweight single sculler when she led all the way over the 2000 metre race distance to win the womens lightweight state title ahead of a hard working Hannah Jansen from the ANA club from WA.

Fiddler then went out and won the first grade womens single scull title in the open class against all comers when she spread eagled the field and rowed away from her much bigger opponents in the second half of the race with which saw Australian representative Laura Osti from Adelaide Uni a distant second and not far ahead of Olympia Aldersey of Torrens, third.

Aldersey had her share of success when she teamed with her fellow junior age Torrens sweep rower, Emma Basher, to easily win the  first grade womens pair ahead of a field of older, more experienced opponents.

Fiddler had also not finished racing for the day and she won two more SA Title events, the lightweight quad scull with her Torrens club mates and the first grade double scull where she teamed with WA rival, Hannah Jansen.

Day two of the state titles again saw Fiddler on the winners podium as she rowed in the bow seat of the Torrens crew which won the first grade eights title by two lengths from Adelaide with the Walford schoolgirls crew a close third in the seven boat field.

Torrens continued their domination in the first grade womens sweep events when they again had a clear water winning margin when they took out the coxless womens fours title.

This victory completed a clean sweep for Torrens of all the womens sweep first grade titles of 2010.

Fiddler then won her sixth title medal to finish her weekend of racing in the first grade womens quad scull with a 7.93 second victory over Adelaide who were 10.09 seconds ahead of Adelaide Uni.

John Jackson from the Adelaide Club won his first Lightweight single sculls state title, winning by a clear water margin from a gallant Adrian Miegel from Murray Bridge.

Jackson’s win was the start of a good run of success for the Adelaide club which then won the mens first grade pairs title, the mens lightweight double  sculls, the mens lightweight quad sculls and also the mens coxless fours first grade title for the second year in a row.

The Adelaide crew which won the mens lightweight quad scull had three brothers from the Gimenez family in it which was a unique sporting thrill for their family winning the State title together.

Murray Bridge won their first state title for the regatta when their mens lightweight four came from behind in the closing stages of their race to overtake Adelaide who had led for most of the race.

The Murray Bridge lightweight four had three rowers from the Christian Brothers College in it.

The last time Murray Bridge won the state title in this boat class was over 30 years ago.

Murray Bridge won another title when Olympian James McRae teamed up with Sam Martin to win the first grade double scull by a large margin, easily accounting for his great rival, Chris Morgan who raced with Tom Sullivan from Renmark, Adelaide Uni were third.

Adelaide Uni won the first grade womens double scull event and the lightweight womens double scull which was one of the closer title races of the day with Adelaide in second place  in that lightweight race.
